What does it really mean to be a 'Work at Home' Dad?
I am able to answer this question from experience as 27 years ago I became a dad for the first time when Steve was born. Two and a half years later my eldest daughter Clare was born. At that time I was working in IT as an Analyst Programmer earning fairly average money to be honest but was working close to home with a large multinational company which provided security for my family. However the prospects to significantly increase my earnings were limited or probably non-existent so I made the decision to leave that secure environment in search of better prospects. I found what I was looking for - my first computer sales role. During the first 12 months I doubled my earnings - exactly what I was hoping to achieve.
But that came at a cost. As an Analyst Programmer I left for work at 7.30am and was home by 4.30pm. So I spent only a little time in the morning with my children and a couple of hours in the evening with them before they went to bed.In my new sales role I would leave home at around 6.30am and arrive home some 12 hours later, so typically I would see my children for only around 30 minutes a day missing out on spending quality time with them and seeing them grow.
Fast forward to December 2007. I am in my third marriage - not a statistic I'm proud of but with a wife who quite simply is the best thing that's ever happened to me.We are working from home together running our first business and expecting our first child. On the 3rd December 2007 Sophie was born and 3 weeks ago tomorrow, 12th October 2010, Daniel was born. We are still working from home but have just launched an exciting new business - Our Internet Marketing Guide & Blog.
To get the most out of our day whilst creating a perfect work/life balance, Karen and I have split our working day into 3 parts:-
7am - 12am
12am - 5pm
6.30pm - 10pm
One of us will work the 7-12am shift whilst the other has quality time with Sophie & Daniel, then we reverse the roles in the afternoon. We then have some quality family time together around dinner, then the evenings are currently spent training & educating ourselves further plus making any remaining calls to new prospects.
What does all this REALLY mean to me as a 'Work at Home' Dad? Well, in the twelve and a half hours the children are awake, I only work for 5 hours therefore I spend over 7 hours with them doing whatever we want to do. For example we go to the park at least twice a week, I take Sophie smimming every Wednesday afternoon (the pool is normally empty except for us!!), we visit my parents at least twice a week as they only live a couple of miles away, I do the weekly food shop too when our local supermarket is pretty quiet......... and all this I can do during the day when many are facing the daily 9-5 grind.
We are together all day, every day, as a family, having fun whilst creating our dream future. For me this is my ideal life and I love every minute. Even better, I can teach other dad's how to create this kind of lifestyle for themselves. Having fun and helping other people - what's better than that!
