What Equipment is needed to go Skiing?
Maybe you're a first time skier, or maybe you haven't been down the slopes for a while. Well it's always worth checking up on what equipment you need to go skiing.
Knowing what equipment to take really depends on your personal circumstances. For example, if you know that you will only go skiing once or twice a year then you may just want to rent the basic ski equipment from your resort. This would be your skis, boots and poles as well as any kind of clothing that you would need.
On the other hand, if you know that you want to get all the gear, as you will be taking regular skiing holidays then you may want to purchase the necessary equipment. There is quite a lot of equipment needed for this winter sport. Regular skiers will tell you though, that once purchased, you will very rarely have to replace the equipment. Unless of course you grow out of them or they get damaged.
Furthermore, you shouldn't get put off by the amount of equipment and the associated costs. The amount each skier spends on equipment can differ. Whilst a seasoned regular will want to spend upwards of thousands of pounds, a beginner can spend anything from 200 for the basics to a 1000 for more specific equipment.
The initial outlay of cost doesn't have to be that much; there are plenty of second-hand or outlet shops selling ski equipment at far more reasonable prices. As previously mentioned, once you have skiing equipment you will rarely need to replace it. It is advisable to purchase this equipment before you get to your resort. Most resorts will provide a huge range of skiing equipment, however this comes at a premium and you would be paying well over the odds.
So what would you need to take? Well first of all, you need skis and poles. Skis can cost anything from a couple of hundred pounds and upwards. Poles are much cheaper and are only really necessary for beginners. The more competent the skier, the less likely they will need poles. Ski boots are also required, to fix onto the skis themselves. Again, these can be quite pricey, but it may be cheaper to rent from your resort.
Next up are your ski clothes. These are designed for two purposes, function and fashion. You need appropriate clothing because you will be spending a lot of time outdoors; therefore, you need to make sure you know the weather conditions of the resort you will be skiing in. There's a good reason for this, most destinations aren't actually freezing cold, and if they are you need ski clothing with insulated layers. However some destinations may be warm or even dry, therefore you need clothes that are lighter and breathable.
It is advisable to actually purchase these as opposed to renting like the ski equipment. First of all you need a ski jacket. The ski jacket could be insulated itself, if not you may need to wear layers; in which case you would need thermals underneath, so a thermal top and trousers. Next are waterproof snow pants or salopettes. These are relatively inexpensive, so you don't need to spend too much on these.
Other equipment may include ski goggles. You may think you may not need these, however it's essential that you do, especially of it is sunny. The sun can reflect off the snow and being so exposed up a mountain may cause serious damage to your eyes should you not wear a pair.
Finally you will need to wear gloves. Thick ski gloves that are waterproof outside and thermal inside will be needed, especially ones with extra grip. In addition you should consider wearing a hat and scarf, especially if the weather is extremely cold.
One last thing to consider is that some resorts may require skiers to have helmets as well, although not all. Therefore it's advisable to check with the resort you are skiing at if they specify wearing a helmet.
