What Ethics Are Involved With Working In The Online Marketing Industry?
The sad reality of life is that there are always going to be people out there who
want to take advantage of you, stealing away your hard earned money and not delivering on their promises. This knowledge has only caused people to become more cautious when it comes to who they trust and who they steer clear of when it comes to the internet and the area that receives the most scrutiny is the online marketing industry.
Unfortunately, there are a number of people out there who like to present themselves as online marketers. They will invent a phony company, a phony website and will begin posting articles and forum comments under their assumed persona. Over time, this person will begin to gain the trust of the masses they will offer marketing advice to businesses that really works and will begin to offer additional services (such as web hosting or SEO) that people are eager to sign up to.
Finally, they may offer to provide an online marketing mentoring program to those who are interested to learn. Many of their loyal follows will be tripping over themselves to sign up to the program, forking out the few hundred dollars (on top of what they have already paid for other services) to join. Within a few months, the marketer has miraculously disappeared your website is now down and whatever money you gave to this person to help you out is gone, never to be seen again. The trust that you had in people who genuinely want to help others out has been shattered and we are right back at square one.
There is, however, definitely some onus on the individuals who choose to engage in the services provided by these online marketing gurus. They should do some research into the background of the marketer before signing on the dotted line to check whether they have a history of fraud, scams or complaints. Whilst there is a strong chance that the marketer may have changed their name since their last foray into unethical territory, you could also try looking into some past scams to see if you notice a similar pattern.
Unfortunately, in these cases, not much can be done to recover whatever money you have lost the internet is still a self-regulating community that doesnt have the authority or the resources to track these sort of scammers down. The ethics of working in the online marketing industry, then, are that you should always be honest and deliver on your promises this will ensure that you reinforce whatever trust you are able to gain from your clients.
