What Everybody Should Know About Total Cholesterol Levels
All we seem to hear about these days is that we should be reducing or lowering our
cholesterol levels, as if all cholesterol is bad! The truth is that you have two types, good and bad, and it is the relationship between these that is more important to your health than your total cholesterol levels. Let me explain. As you may be aware, you have LDL cholesterol or the bad one and HDL or the good one. If you have too much LDL it can block up your arteries and lead to premature death and heart disease. HDL however runs through your system cleaning up excess LDL and returning it to the liver for reprocessing. So the more you have of this one, the healthier you will be. You will find that a cholesterol chart will generally say to have around 200mg/dl of total cholesterol, 100mg/dl of LDL and at least 40mg/dl of HDL. A good ratio is 3:1 LDL to HDL and an excellent one is 2:1 and this relationship is more important than your total cholesterol figure. This means that you could have a high total but if you ratio is good, you may not need any treatment. Check with your doctor first but try to resist starting with statin drugs as your first option. Statin drugs are not the wonder solution they are made out to be and can increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke and can lower your cholesterol levels too much resulting in muscle pain and depression. If your cholesterol needs treating, try to start with a natural one first. The right blend of extracts has been shown to be just as effective as statins but without the side effects! Ingredients like Policosanol from sugar cane and Phytosterols from plants are regarded as the best along with others like D-Limonene and Pumpkin oil. These are proven to significantly reduce your LDL and increase your HDL by up to 20%. Now that you understand the significance of your individual levels rather than solely focussing on your total cholesterol figure, you can more accurately assess your needs and know the best natural ingredients to look for to balance your levels naturally and safely.
