What Eye Surgery Complications You Can Expect

If you are intending to undergo eye surgery, there are certain things that you should expect

. First of all, not all eye surgeries go the way they intended as nobody is perfect and secondly, even if it seems fine at first, the problem may not manifest itself until years to come. Whilst this may scare you off eye surgery, it should be noted that the overwhelming majority of patients have had positive experiences and in virtually all cases, have given consent and known what complications they were expecting.

One of the common eye surgery complications that you can expect after surgery is dry eye. This doesn't just apply for laser based surgeries but for most other surgeries as well, such as cataract surgery. This usually resolves itself over time and your doctor should have given you artificial tears and advised you to drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids, such as fish, walnuts and flaxseeds, in order to help reduce the symptoms of dry eyes, itching, burning and general ocular discomfort.

There are also long term consequences stemming from surgery of the eye, since any kind of surgery would have physically altered the normal functioning of the eye, prior to surgery. In the case of LASIK surgery, there is a low chance of the patient developing glaucoma, an even lower chance for cataracts, retinal detachment and also vision loss. In order to minimize these catastrophes from occurring, it is recommend that you continue to consult with your doctor regularly every week for at least 6 months after the surgery to see how well your eye is healing or adapting to your new found vision.

Laser eye surgeries, especially LASIK, tend to have quite a few eye surgery complications that some others do not have. For example, another notable LASIK risk is flap complications. In other words, the flap cut out by the surgeon during the procedure could have been badly placed back on the cornea or become infected which could result in either keraectasia or diffuse lamellar keratitis. Both of these conditions can become fairly serious and once again, there is a need to follow up with your doctor, and also your eye surgeon, to see how well your eyes are healing.

These are just some of the eye surgery complications that you can expect from a typical surgery. It isn't particularly encouraging to someone wishing to have surgery on their eyes but if you are informed about such things, then you will know how to react to these situations more appropriately and be able to treat or avoid these complications which could make or break your vision.
