When you look at a tin of loose leaf tea or a box of teabags, have you ever considered what goes into each type of tea? Connoisseurs aside, most don't even think about it. But not all teas are the same. Teabags typically contain smaller leaves or pieces, but full leaves may be added. Loose blends, on the other hand, are often composed of full leaves and, in some cases, herbs, spices, or dried fruit for flavor.

Basic black tea comes from the camellia sinensis plant, which is grown in parts of Asia and Africa. Popular blends of black teas, however, do not come from one location, although flavors are often described as being "malty" regardless. Rather, certain blends contain leaves from India, China, and Africa, and additional ingredients may be added. Earl Grey, a black tea with a citrus flavor, has multiple types of teas included and bergamot oil.

Green teas, similarly, come from two parts of the world Japan or Asia but a typical blend is often exclusive to a location. As a result, each different type of green tea has its own taste, and outside ingredients may even be added. A green tea from Japan, for example, has toasted rice mixed in.

Although "light" describes the flavor of most white teas, the quality of the blend depends on the ratio of leaves to buds. Loose leaf white teas, for example, are a combination of leaves and buds, although the highest-quality blends are composed exclusively of the latter. Because of the light taste, however, white tea often has a flavor infusion. Various fruits, herbs, or spices may also be mixed in with a loose leaf white tea blend.

Herbals teas, also called tisanes, contain no leaves from the camellia sinensis plant and instead are a mix of various fruits, herbs, spices, and flowers. No matter if you go with a bagged or loose leaf blend, herbal teas may contain a combination of these: Vanilla chamomile tea, for instance, contains dried herbs and pieces of vanilla bean. An orange spice tea, similarly, has pieces of peel and cinnamon or another spice. No matter what is in the tea, the blend is steeped to produce a flavorful brew.
