On July 4, 1776 , in Philadelphia , where they met in Convention , representatives of the Thirteen Colonies of British North America proclaimed their independence in the enthusiasm .Unilateral, that is to say not recognized by the city , this proclamation will lead to a war that pitted the Insurgents, Minority , and British troops reinforced by the Loyalists.

The basic idea of a resolution providing that " United States are and should be entitled , free and independent States " returns to the Virginian R. H. Lee . The resolution was seconded by John Adams , delegate from Massachusetts ( one of the instigators of the Tea Party ) . A five-member committee was immediately charged with drafting the text.

The principal author of the Declaration of Independence is chairman of the committee , Thomas Jefferson , a wealthy plantation owner of many slaves, including Adams and assisted Franklin

The Declaration states in terms doomed to immortality the right of all human beings to the pursuit of happiness :

"We hold thesis Truth to Be Self -evident , That all men are created equal, That They Are Endowed by Their Creator with certain unalienable rights are Life That Among thesis , Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness "

The anniversary of that day deserved to become the national holiday of the United States of America although it has not devoted the effective independence of the country . It will await Treaty of Versailles.

It must be said that two thirds of the 2.5 million inhabitants of the Thirteen Colonies remain loyal to the British crown and King George III or less indifferent to the claims of Insurgents ( insurgents ). Among the loyalists is the son of Benjamin Franklin, one of the heroes of the insurgency.

The war has just begun between the army Insurgents, Under the command of George Washington , and the Loyalists and British armies , reinforced by numerous German mercenaries .
