What Happens During Facelift Surgery?
In today's medical world, there are many anti-aging methods that provide promising results. Botox, Restylane, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels are all fantastic methods for individuals looking to improve the appearance of their skin through wrinkle reduction. However, these methods are all temporary, and may not be able to address patients with deep lines and wrinkles or considerable facial sagging. In these instances, a traditional facelift is the way to go. A surgical Scottsdale facelift lasts for about 10 years and is the only treatment that can address severe facial elasticity loss and the effects of gravity.
What it Treats
An aging face exhibits fine lines and wrinkles, skin pigmentation, loss of volume, loss of elasticity, and sagging due to gravity. While resurfacing techniques like microdermabrasion may help reduce the appearance of superficial wrinkles and skin pigmentation, a Scottsdale facelift is best for restoring elasticity and eliminating the effects of gravity, particularly if the sights of loose skin are along the jaw line or under the chin. A facelift can also address sagging in the middle of the face, deep creases along the lower eyelids or along the nose, displaced facial fat, and loose skin that can cause a double chin even in individuals of normal weight and health.
The Procedure
A facelift is a significant procedure because it involves the actual repositioning of facial skin and tissues. During the procedure, your surgeon will place you under anesthesia, though the degree of the anesthetic depends on how much of the face you are having worked on. In some cases, your surgeon may place you under only local anesthesia if it is not an extensive Scottsdale facelift. Then, incisions are made in front of or behind the ear and may extend into the scalp; this cut is strategically placed in an area where the natural crease of the skin will camouflage the scar. Once the cut is made, the deeper layers of the face are "lifted" by removing excess skin, fat, and in some cases actually reshaping the muscle tissues. Following tightening of the facial muscles and skin, it is sutured in place and the recovery process begins.
The surgery usually takes anywhere between two to four hours, depending on what you are having lifted and the expertise of the surgeon. For the first 24 hours, patients are usually bruised and swollen, but these are all normal aspects of the healing process following such a Scottsdale facelift.
