What Happens If My Shipment Gets Refused
When you send something to a client COD instead of standard delivery
, it changes the possibilities which could take place at the end of that shipment. A new option is opened up to a customer if the Chicago messenger company brings something to them on a COD basis. This is the fact that they now have the right to refuse the package if they decide that they no longer want to accept it. This doesn't happen often, but if COD shipping is a model which you plan to utilize you do need to familiarize yourself with what will take place in this eventuality.
When you ship something COD, the customer has not paid for it. They don't pay until after they have received the shipment. Because of this, they haven't actually bought anything. There are laws in place which are designed to keep customers from being taken advantage of under the COD model. This results in a rule where anything which is sent to a customer can be refused by them if they decide they no longer want the item.
If your customer refuses to accept the package, it is going to need to be returned to you. When this happens, the courier company will deliver the package to you just like they delivered it to the customer in the first place. Essentially, this means that they will deliver the package twice. That is why most refused COD shipments result in a fee to the shipping company.
This is why some companies charge customer a non-refundable shipping deposit when they are shipping something to them COD. You hear this type of disclaimer all the time on late night infomercials which offer COD shipping. That way, they are protected against the cost they face from their courier company should their shipment eventually be refused by the customer.
A few refusals from time to time are inevitable. However, the best thing to do is to continue to find ways to provide the best products possible to your customers so that it is much less likely that they get refused. If everything that you ship out is top quality, and if you always ship the exact product that your customers order, you will experience much lower refusal rates than those companies that take less care with their shipments. This will save you money and increase the level of satisfaction felt by your customers.
