What Happens When I Go In For Lasik Surgery?

Lasik surgery has become more common, cheaper

, easier, and more convenient over the past few years. If you're thinking of going in for Lasik surgery yourself, you're probably wondering exactly what happens, what you need to know and what you need to do. Here are the procedures surrounding Lasik surgery.

Evaluation - Before you even begin to think about getting Lasik surgery, you need to go in to see a qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist to decide if Lasik surgery is the best choice for you. Even though there are a lot of businesses offering cut rate prices for Lasik, go with someone reputable and someone you feel you can trust. Remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Evaluation by a trusted eye doctor is important, because even though Lasik surgery can correct many optical problems, it cannot correct them all. Other considerations, such as your health, your age, the severity of your problem, or even recent changes in your eyes can make the difference in which procedures you choose.

How it works - If you and your doctor have met and decided that Lasik surgery is for you, then what's the next step? What comes next prepares you for the actual surgery.

If you wear soft contact lenses, you will be asked to stop wearing them anywhere from five to twenty-one days before surgery. Hard contact use will have to be discontinued for at least six weeks, and plan on another six weeks for every three years you've worn them. Prior to the actual surgery, a cornea examination will be done with a laser to make an actual topographic map of your eyes to determine thickness and irregularities. Antibiotics will normally be prescribed.

The operation itself is usually quick and easy. The patient is normally awake and the procedure can take as little as five minutes.

Going from the map of your eye, a corneal suction ring is attached and a small flap is cut into the cornea, exposing the stroma. Once inside, an Excimer laser starts reshaping the eye by vaporizing specific tissue, while leaving other tissue unharmed. The flap is then replaced and the surgery is done.

After the operation, the doctor will give the patient antibiotic/steroidal eye drops to aid in the healing process. Sleep is suggested and protective shield and goggles are used to protect the eyes from light and unintentional rubbing.

The Lasik procedure has been tested to be safe and effective, but in some rare occurrences, certain complications may occur.

Dry eyes can occur from any eye surgery. Sometimes under-correction or over -correction will occur. Other complications can be vitamin D deficiency, halos or bursts of light, ghost images, and sensitivity to light, floaters, debris or growth under the flap, among others. All of these situations are repairable and some adjustment is sometimes necessary.

Lasik surgery can be a useful and life-changing procedure, and it might be the right procedure for you. Check with your eye doctor and if you both decide it could be beneficial to you, then go ahead and set up the appointment.
