As a personal finance teacher, I am often approached by parents and other teachers for advice. One of the easiest ways individuals can begin to take charge of their finances is to pull their credit reports. This is a free service offered by all three of the major credit reporting bureaus; Experian, TransUnion and Equifax are all required by law to provide a free copy of a consumer's report to the consumer when requested once a year. If the consumer simply takes the time to go to the web site and fill out a request, they can receive one report every 4 months, alternating between the three services. Each of these reports are also available through a single location, http://www.creditscoredirect.com, then select the report you are interested in. If you have ever had an identity theft alert placed on your report, you will need to print out a copy of the manual request form, fill it out, and mail it in. This method takes about two to three weeks.
