What If You Can't Get Health Insurance?

With health care costs rising at an astronomical rate in comparison to inflation and job creation

, it is not surprising that there are so many Americans living without any kind of health insurance. Whether it is due to income or pre-existing conditions, there are still options available to help offset the high prices of both health care and traditional health insurance.

If you may be considered to be low income, first look to the local social service agency for programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Individuals and families that find themselves stuck between middle income and extremely low income also may be eligible for other state programs specifically for those in their income bracket.

Just as there are local care insurance brokers, there are also health insurance brokers. In fact, many brokerage firms cover both forms of insurance. Either in-person or via a phone conversation, a good deal of personal medical information is provided to the broker, who then requests quotes from health insurance companies on your behalf. Once the quotes have been received, the most promising ones are presented to you for perusal. This is done at no extra cost to you, the consumer.

Once quotes have been received, it is extremely important to read each policy in entirety, first looking at the premium. If the premium is simply not affordable for you to pay every month, there is no use wasting time on looking at the policy. Then look for any riders. Riders are essentially additions to the policy that provide additional limits. These limitations may be completely excluding coverage for certain pre-existing conditions or the addition of a sky-high deductible that must be met before care for a specific condition is covered.

If no luck was found with an insurance broker, many states have a high-risk insurance pool specifically for individuals with pre-existing conditions that are unable to obtain coverage elsewhere. Coverage may not be denied for anyone that meets these criteria, though premiums are higher than those of traditional insurance companies. However, there is a prescription drug allowance as well as an annual spending cap.

Discount cards are another option for anyone who is unable to afford or qualify for health insurance. These offer a discount on prescriptions as well as medical services. These may be used by anyone regardless of medical history and require a small monthly premium. Many counties also offer prescription discount cards free of charge to anyone without health insurance. They usually are available upon request from any local pharmacy.

A new option is known as mini-med care. This type of plan offers partial coverage for certain services, requiring a monthly payment. These plans are great for preventative services and regular medical expenses, but have a low monthly payout, making them undesirable when it comes to long term care or emergency visits.

Whatever option you find is best for your needs; there are options available if you find yourself denied for health insurance.
