There are different letters on the car tail like 1.8T
, 2.7TDI, or 2.4L. They are used to indicate the boosting methods of cars. For instance, T stands for turbo. It uses turbocharger to boost the car. L stands for natural air intake sometimes, or means mechanical pressure increase. So, what is the difference for three types of air intake methods?
Natural aspiration: without any turbocharger utility, normal pressure would press the air into burning house. Since one of pressing process can be ignored, natural aspiration engine would get better feature on smooth and direct feedback of power output compared with turbocharger engine. Mechanical supercharger: with the precondition to sustain engine exhaust, the power wheel output can be improved. The mechanical turbocharger engine would get stronger output with fast rolling speed. However, since the mechanical turbocharger is led by belt drive, the oil cost would be greater. Its noise would be louder and the maintenance cost is a little bit higher.
Turbocharger is a heating tech in recent years. It has become the byword for new technology. The theory of turbocharger is to use engine exhaust to drive the pressing machine. The increased pressure of turbocharger would be bigger than mechanical booster. It applies the exhaust energy, so it would not bring extra oil waste for engine in theory. The driving oil and lubrication oil should get changed frequently. The foreign matter would bring larger friction and damage on turbo. So, the triple-filtering device should get replaced in time. The cold starting should be with slow speed to bring enough time for turbo and lubrication oil in sound working condition. Before stopping, it would drive in idle speed in advance to naturally lower down the turbo temperature.
As a whole, three kinds of intake methods are all with pros and cons. It is hard to tell their advanced or weakness features. The key point is to choose the most proper item based on personal preference and driving habit.
