What exactly is a 3D trophy?

There are a variety of these available today and you may well have seen one even if you didnt recognise what it was. Perhaps the most familiar example is the desk or display item that comprises a block of glass or Perspex (other materials may be available) within which is engraved a 3D image of a person or object.

What are they used for?

A 3D trophy can be required for a large variety of purposes. Perhaps at one time they were best known as largely novelty objects, which were displayed as a sign of corporate or personal wealth. The technology to produce them initially was restricted to a relatively few major and specialist organisations with the consequence that they were relatively expensive. Today, they have become recognised as pieces of art or decoration in their own right. It is possible to see them used as desk ornaments, paperweights, decorative items on display shelves, trophies in cabinets or hung on walls as purely artistic items. They are typically produced by a method of laser engraving using a digitised image, which is then engraved in 3D within the item concerned.

What commercial applications do they have?

The uses are almost unlimited. They have obvious applications as commercial gifts in the sense of advertising materials or branded utility objects. They can, of course, be produced and simply sold as trophies or decorative items for purposes such as commemorative issues or recognition of achievement.

What sort of images can be used?

Virtually anything. You can use either pre-existing images or have them designed to your bespoke requirements. Of course, the issues associated with copyrighted images must be taken into account when you are producing your files and specification for laser engraving.

Why do some images appear to be better than others?

There are essentially two possible reasons for that:

1.The medium used to display the image and the technology used to produce it.

2.The quality of the artwork of the image itself.

The first point might be considered relatively self-explanatory while the second perhaps merits a word or two. It is a crude analogy but you may have seen photographs that have been superbly printed and framed but where there is something about the underlying quality of the image itself (detail, focus, depth etc.) which leaves a little to be desired. To some extent, this might apply in the case of the 3D trophy also. Whether you are using a bespoke or existing image, it might be advisable to use the services of a professional design organisation in order to achieve the highest quality design images as input to the laser engraving processes.
