The typical pharmacy, where the pharmacist simply spins behind and reaches for an

already-made prescription, helps us to forget that at one time it was common practice for pharmacists to use their expertise to concoct their own elixirs. Only in the 1950s did pharmacists start dispensing already made antidotes, but before that it was standard practice for each pharmacist to compound his own cures. There are some big differences in their approach, and the benefits are numerous.

The compounding pharmacy has to problem solve on the spot, and draw on their medical learning and practice to concoct the best medicine. Sometimes people complain of a stubborn ailment that big pharmacies dont seem to be able to cure. Frequently this is because in order for them to produce such a cure, it must be economically feasible, and this is not always the case. This is where the resourcefulness of the compounder comes in handy. He is not simply reaching for something already made, he is providing a cure that is custom made for each patient according to his or her specific ailment.

While the image might summon the picture of an antique apothecary creating medicines out of something he grows in his back yard, the modern picture is nothing like this! They work in a highly technical space, using hair nets and surgical masks and tiny, sensitive implements, all done in an air-controlled environment. Highly maintained and polished mixers and grinders are used in the production, and the entire scene takes place behind a glass enclosure. The equipment is expensive and complicated, and useless without the wily smarts of the pharmacist operating them.

The consultation period is thorough, and is an essential aspect of the process. Afterwards, the pharmacist hands her not exactly a prescription, but what is essentially a recipe for the cure that will be officially sanctioned by a doctor before its taken. In this way, the compounding pharmacist isnt some fringe medical practitioner, but a highly experienced professional working well within the confined of traditional medicine. In an age where naturalists and other quasi-experts abound, its important not to lump the real experts into these disreputable categories.

It is a shame that mainstream pharmacies dole out medicine while necessarily being connected to economic considerations, but the push for more targeted cures can be met with this new/old approach, and it fits our current economic model. It is a wonderful mix of the old-world resourcefulness that allowed a professional to use his judgement without the constraints of a bureaucracy, while the new-world Medicare system watches on with an approving eye. The reports are positive, as patients have reported not only success, but fewer instances of gastrointestinal complications that came alongside the positive results from other cures. This is encouraging news for a resurgent field that is starting to gain more prominence in the industry and in the publics attention. So long as people receive cures for whats ailing them, it can only be good news!
