By knowing the expectations of the publisher, the piece can be geared toward what works best for all parties.

This is especially important if the copy editor is also formatting the book. By having clear expectations from the publisher, the copy editor can tailor the book to the printer's specifications. This cuts down both on time and labor, as one person is able to efficiently do the job.

This allows there to be one professional working through the entire project, rather than several different people stepping in to complete various jobs.
