What Is A Good Candidate For Dental Implants?
Dental Implants are usually made and installed at a cosmetic dentistry by a maxillofacial surgeon
. To be able to have dental implants, dental patients must be good candidates. A cosmetic dentistry and/or maxillofacial surgeon will be able to evaluate dental patients desiring dental implants and let the dental patients know if they are good candidates for dental implants.
Two dental issues that would stand in the way of dental patients being good candidates for dental implants are bone loss and gum disease. Because dental implants require two dental surgery processes dental patients must have a certain standard of oral and dental health before dental implants can be installed. If dental patients have bone loss there is always the option of bone grafting surgery. With gum disease there's always antibiotics and changing dental care habits that can help. Once the gum disease is cured and there is no more bone loss, then dental patients can qualify for dental implants.
The surgery process of dental implants will take several months of time. First, a dental patient must meet with a maxillofacial surgeon to verify that the patient is a good candidate for dental implants as discussed above. Once this is determined, the cosmetic dentistry will discuss with the patient any concerns and what the goal of the dental implants surgery will be. The cosmetic dentistry will also discuss the process of the dental implants surgery series with the dental patient as well as payment plans and what medical insurance pays, etc. Once there is an understanding between the cosmetic dentistry and the dental patient about dental implants, the maxillofacial surgeon will take the necessary procedures to prepare to make the dental implants custom to the dental patient as well as make decisions about how to proceed with the dental implants surgery. The maxillofacial surgeon will take x-rays and may even make a mold of the dental patients mouth. There may also be some dentures made for the dental patient to wear during the time of still living with the missing teeth.
Once all of this preliminary stuff is done, then the actual dental implants surgery is done. The dental patient will need to bring someone with them to take them home, as the dental patient will have much more than local anesthesia. The dental patient will be put to sleep by a sedation dentist and prepared for the surgery. Essentially what happens in this first surgery for dental implants is that the maxillofacial surgeon will use a dental drill to make a hole in the jaw bone of the dental patient where the missing teeth once were and where the dental implants will later be anchored.
Once this surgery is complete which is basically creating an anchor for the dental implants, the dental patient will need to take some time to heal. There will be several follow-up visits with the cosmetic dentistry as the dental patients jaw bone and surgery area heals completely. This is the longest part of the dental implants process and this is the time period when the dental patient would use the dentures temporarily. After healing the dental implants will be installed and the dental patient will have dental implants looking like natural teeth!
