What Is A Greek Pizza?

Pizza is often seen as a purely Italian food. In fact, pizza was a part of the food culture in many parts of the world as long as 3,000 years ago. Greece is a country with a long tradition of making pizza. In the US, Greek immigrants made their pizza to a different recipe than the one used by the Italians immigrants. Today, Greek style pizzas are growing in popularity in the US and other western countries.

There are two types of Greek pizza. The most obvious type is a pizza, which is topped with ingredients that are popular in Greek cuisine. This includes things like; feta cheese, green bell peppers, Kalamaa olives, onions, Greek meats and gyros. It is not uncommon for a Greek pizza to include spinach.

The less obvious type of Greek pizza is an ordinary pizza whose base is made in the Greek style. It is standard dough, but has an oily springy texture and is much thicker than an Italian pizza base. The dough is rolled out, and placed into a pan instead of directly onto the bricks of the pizza oven. As a result it can be more easily cooked in a regular oven. Sometimes honey and oil are added to the dough as well. To stop the pizza from sticking, oil is rubbed onto the cooking pan.

Normally, Greek pizza is sold with a Greek salad or gyros ,as an accompaniment. Gyros is a dish, which consists of meat, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce. Tzatziki sauce is made of strained yoghurt, cucumber, minced garlic, salt, olive oil and pepper. Sometimes dill, lemon juice, parsley or mint are also added.

Greek pizzas were first sold outside of Greece in pizzerias that were opened by Greek immigrants to the USA during the 1910s and 1920s. By 1930, there were 50,000 Greek immigrants within New York. As a result, it was in New York that Greek pizza was first made and sold to the general public. Unlike the Italians who opened shops selling only pizza, the Greek immigrants always sold other foods alongside their pizzas.
