What Is A Reach Stacker?
If you work in an industry that requires you to do a lot of heavy lifting
, you will be familiar with the range of machinery that has been created to help you do this with ease. Whilst forklifts are found in most factories and cranes at most construction sites, one piece of heavy lifting machinery that you may not be familiar with is the reach stacker. This is an extremely useful piece of machinery that can actually be found in a number of workplaces.
So, what is a reach stacker? Essentially, it is a vehicle that is used for lifting and moving cargo containers (like those seen stacked on ships that ferry goods from one country to another). These stackers are only able to transport a container a reasonably short distance, then pile them up on top of each other. They are commonly used in smaller to medium sized ports, as cranes are the lifter of choice in the larger ones.
In many ways, this machinery actually resembles a crane, albeit on a much smaller scale. It features a can on wheels where the operator may sit and be protected in the case of falling containers, and a hydraulic beam that extends upwards and out from the main body. At the end of this beam is the lifting mechanism of the reach stacker it is the length of a cargo container and has a clamp at either end. These clamps lock into place around the container, enabling the operator to lift and move it.
Many industries prefer the use of reach stackers over other heavy lifting machinery, such as forklifts, as their flexibility allows them to stack containers much higher. There are also stackers available that are designed specifically for transporting empty containers. In some cases, containers can be stacked up to four deep, as the hydraulic beam allows the operator second row access. When it comes to storing containers in limited space, the use of a stacker is definitely the way to go.
Working in an industry that works extensively with shipping cargo containers will mean that you require the assistance of some heavy lifting machinery that is able to lift these containers, empty or full to the brim. The best way to move your containers from place to place or even on and off a ship as they are docked at the port is with a reach stacker.
