There are barbs on one end of the thread that grab the sagging skin, and teeth on the other side attach the skin to the surrounding facial tissues. This whole operation is done with a thin needle, and no incisions or stitches are required. Subsequently, there is no scarring as with a traditional face lift.

The two types of thread lifts currently being performed in the United States are the Contour Threadlift and the Featherlift. There are a few differences in the two procedures. The Countour thread material is made out of clear polypropylene and has barbs along that thread that open like an umbrella. The Featherlift method was developed overseas and has barbs that are inserted along through the entire length of the thread.

Recovery is quick and the pain is minimal, requiring only over the counter medication. Most people can resume normal, non-strenuous activity within 24 hours and resume all activities within a week.
