What Is A Thrift Shop?

For the struggling college student, or really anyone looking to stay on a budget

, thrift stores are a great place to shop. They have great deals on gently used second-hand clothes and other items, and they can often be a very fun place to shop.

So what qualifies as a thrift store? You would think the answer is obvious, but perhaps not. A lot of people aren't very clear on the distinction between a thrift store and a second-hand shop. Even though thrift stores do sell second hand clothes and items, there are plenty of second hand or consignment shops that are not thrift stores.

A thrift store is a store that is run by and benefits a charitable organization. Their goods are usually donated, and the proceeds benefit whatever organization runs the shop. The majority of thrift stores are run by religious organizations or hospitals. There are also well known organizations such as the Salvation Army.

Thrift store shopping is always fun because you can find a good deal and also feel good about supporting a good cause. For those who have never shopped at a thrift store before, try to find out what the different stores are in your community. There might even be one run by an organization you would like to support.

I had never been in a thrift store myself until recently, and I was a definitely unsure about it. I assumed all they have are old, moldy smelling clothes my grandmother would have worn, but I was pleasantly surprised. Some stores have a better selection than others, but once you find the right store they often have some good finds.

The biggest key to thrift store shopping is patience shopping a thrift store is similar to shopping a bargain store like Marshalls or T.J. Maxx because there's so much to go through to get to the few perfect deals. In most stores there are rows and row of clothes with little concern for the aesthetics of display. It's a little daunting when you're looking to buy one pair of pants and you're faced with a row of hundreds. Just stay patient and think of it as a treasure hunt. Keeping in mind how much money you can save this way doesn't hurt either!

The other thing to remember is that thrift stores aren't the place to shop for everything you need. I certainly wouldn't walk in expecting to get a whole wardrobe in one trip, but it's a great way to fill in a few items or pick up some extras while cash is tight.

Next time you want something a little different consider skipping the mall and heading to your local thrift store instead. Not only can you pick a few things up for a good price, but you might be able to get rid of a couple old ones at the same time!
