What Is A Veneer?
If you have particularly stained or discolored teeth for any reason
, you may hear your Palatine dentists suggest veneers to you at some point in time. These are typically used for one of two primary reasons. The first is to improve the appearance of a tooth. The second is to improve a tooth which has become damaged in some way and needs a protective layer of some sort reestablished on its surface.
There are two main types of veneers. There are those which are known as a composite veneer first. These are those which may be actually created in the mouth. The person building the veneers will shape and create them around the tooth itself while working in the mouth. Composite veneers can be created in a lab as well. These will then be bonded to the tooth later. The other type of veneer is a porcelain veneer. These cannot be created in the mouth, and must be formed in a lab first and then affixed to the teeth. Of the two types, composite veneers are becoming more popular because of the propensity of porcelain veneers to fracture.
Sometimes, problems such as teeth which appear slightly out of alignment, or crooked or misshapen in some way can be corrected through the application of veneers. By creating veneers which have the proper ratio to each other and which create a uniform shape, a more pleasing line can be created in the mouth. This is often a much quicker options compared to the orthodontic procedures which would be required to actually shift the teeth themselves. Sometimes both methods are used.
Veneers are used most commonly by someone practicing cosmetic dentistry, because in most cases their application is one that is used to enhance the visible aesthetics of the teeth rather than oral health. However, it has been shown many times that a good appearance, including attractive teeth, is very important to self esteem and good mental health, making this an important part of overall self maintenance. Sometimes a single veneer may be applied to correct a single malformation, such as a single misshapen tooth, or a tooth which has become cracked. In other cases, multiple veneers may be applied. This might be done so people can get a perfect smile, and is a common part of total makeovers. It's difficult to match the color of a single veneer to the surrounding teeth, but installing several side by side creates a more natural look.
