What Is An Ltl Shipment?

that you've moved up from using delivery vans to using full size trucks, you're going to start being presented with new options for service from that company. The larger your shipments grow, the more difficult this decision can be to make, so it's important to understand the key differences between the two primary forms of trucking, which are LTL and FTL shipping.

LTL and FTL stand for less than truck load and full truck load respectively. These are the two main ways that trucking companies use their trucks. The essence of it is that an LTL truck will move cargo which belongs to several different clients. An FTL truck will instead only move cargo which belongs to one customer.

When you're shipping your cargo on an LTL truckload, the entire truck is going to be full, but you will only be using as much of the truck as you require for your goods. The other available space on the vehicle will be given to other clients of the courier company that need to move their goods in the same general direction. This means that most LTL vehicles run full, and it also means that many of the costs of that shipment are then shared between a few different parties.

That cost saving feature is the primary reason why many people decide to use LTL shipping. Anything which is over 100lbs approaches being too heavy for shipping in a regular courier vehicle, and needs to be trucked instead. However, until you approach 10,000lbs of cargo, it is generally impractical to use FTL shipping. Everything in between these weights generally ships LTL, which is why this shipping option is so popular.

There is only really one downside to LTL shipping, and that is the time that it might take your shipment to be delivered. This is only going to be a concern if you're starting to approach the upper limit of LTL shipping weights; otherwise the price differential for moving to FTL is too great. However, if you're near the borderline of the weight classes, some clients prefer to move to FTL because their shipments will be delivered quicker. That is because during an LTL shipment the truck may be delayed several times during the delivery while the orders belonging to other clients are being dropped off. This will depend of course on where your deliveries are scheduled amidst the other clients.
