What Is Aquaponic System?
Aquaponics is a modern way of approaching organic farming
. Traditional agriculture requires soil in order to grow fruits and vegetables, with aquaponics all you need is water and fish for vegetable to thrive in your garden. In simple terms, aquaponics is a symbiosis between fish and plants: the fish supply the bio-nutrients for the plants to feed of, while the plants purify the water, creating a great environment for the fish to develop.
Since the 70s the development of a sustainable system became many farmers goal. What makes aquaponic such a great system is the realization that fish and plants can grow in a mutual interaction and benefit each other. Not just that you are able to grow organic vegetables without fertilizers or pesticides, you can raise fish as well. After assembling a system like that at home all you need to do next is to feed your fish, the maintenance of the system is almost not required except for water inspection and cropping your plants.
Aquaponic system rely on three main components; Fish, Bacteria, and Plants.
The fish:
It all begins with the fish. In order for the system to work you need bio-nutrients for your plant to grow; fish held in tanks producing waste, bacteria in the water breaking down the waste into nourishing substances
that plants can feed of.
Where would the bacteria come from?
After placing the fish in the water it will take the bacteria a few days to cultivate and grow. This is a natural process that will happen without your interference, all you need to do after placing the fish in the tank is to feed them. Two types of bacteria present in the water will help break down fish waste and chemicals such as ammonia, the chemical breakdown of waste substances in the water will increase the amount of usable nutrients for the plants. When the nourishing substances in the water reach an optimal level, you can start planting your seeds.
The plants:
The plants in aquaponic planted in growing beds that float on top of the water, the plants can float on top because they are placed on a buoyant medium such as Styrofoam. The plants roots are in direct contact with the water, a separator is placed between the fish and the plants roots so the fish will not feed of the roots. The rest of the plants surfaces are fully exposed to natural sunlight.
Aquaponic systems are very flexible and can be assembled in different ways depends on the system requirement. Small aquaponic systems can be created with tubs, barrels, or just about any large vessel that can contain water. More complex aquaponic systems need more than a water tank, depends on the amount of fish and plants you would like to grow, aquaponic can be scaled up and down as needed and can be always improved with more components like water filter, water pump, and even a solar panel, that can reduce your
electricity bill and help automate your system.
