What Is Better, Freeview or Freesat?
"Over the past year or so, I have been surprised to see the number questions posed
to me by all the people I have met asking the basic difference between freesat and freeview television services. Finally, after the number and variety of questions becoming intolerable I have produced ONE comprehensive answer to MANY FREESAT & FREEVIEW questions. I have tried to cover all you need to know so that you can make an informed decision.
THE BASICS
What is FREESAT: Freesat refers to a free satellite TV service that allows you free access to over 140 channels (Interactive, TV and Radio channels inclusive) and several HD channels also. It's a non-profit joint venture of ITV and BBC.
What is FREEVIEW: By 2012 if you do not have a Freeview Box/Freeview enabled TV or a Virgin Media/Sky TV subscription at home, you will not be able to watch television. (This will be happening before 2012 in some locations in the UK) Freeview is the set of free digital TV and Radio channels that will be replacing the analogue signal by 2012. (The digital freeview signal is already being broadcast in the UK) At the moment you can receive freeview and analogue signal in the UK. Your "switchover" date is the date of when the analogue signal will be turned off. Moreover, it's not just the existing channels; the newer breed of channels will be made in digital formats ONLY!
UNDERSTAND THIS The Freesat and Freeview coverage area is not yet 100% for the whole of UK. Actually Freesat coverage is available in 98% of UK and Freeview in around 70% of UK. Obviously you cannot use a service if it is not supported in your area so the first step is to see which service you actually do have available. Click on these links to check FREESAT | FREEVIEW .
WHAT IF YOU HAVE BOTH AVAILABLE ???
If your area is supported by just Freeview or Freesat only, then the matter would be simple. You would be in no doubt. However, if you had both available in your area, here is a guide to help you make your decision.
Freesat will certainly give you more channels but will require a correctly aligned satellite dish. However quite a few popular channels like Dave, Virgin1 etc are not supported by Freesat. Here is a table that should help you decide.

If you are content with the more popular channels and are not fussy, then get Freeview installed today. It is cheaper and will be covering the whole of UK by 2012.
If you live out of Freeview coverage, your signal strength is weak, or if you are lover of more choice in channels then get your Freesat Setup today.
