What Is Bruxism
Either consciously or unconsciously, we all sometimes grind our teeth
. Most of the time occasionally grinding our teeth causes no damage. However, if a person grinds their teeth regularly, either consciously or when they are asleep, then certain oral health problems can occur.
The regular grinding of the teeth is call bruxism. Grinding can be caused by anxiety and stress and is known to most happen during the night when the individual is asleep. Because the person doing the grinding is asleep, they are unaware that they are doing it at all. They only become aware of the problem if, after a period of time, their teeth become damaged or if their partner, who sleeps next to them, eventually notices.
You should also keep in mind that in addition to adults, children grind their teeth as well. Mostly children grow out of this habit. But if they don't, then they might be suffering from an underlining health condition, such as anxiety, nutritional deficiencies and allergies, among other disorders. Speak with your doctor if you child does not stop this habit.
Regularly grinding your teeth can indeed be harmful. It can eventually grind down the enamel and wear down your teeth. If this occurs, crowns, root canals and/or teeth implants may be necessary, since our teeth do not have the capacity to grow back. Furthermore, teeth grinding can also lead to migraines and headaches, hearing loss, and even transform the appearance of your face.
There are a few ways to stop one's self from grinding their teeth. After a consulting with your dentist, he or she can create a costume mouth guard which you can wear at night. The mouth guard stops the bottom teeth from grinding against the upper teeth, and thus, protects your teeth from getting damaged. Additionally, since sometimes the grinding of teeth is a result of stress, you may want to speak with either a therapist or attend stress counseling classes in order to help reduce your stress levels. If stress is indeed the cause, they one method of curbing your teeth grinding can be to take muscle relaxants, which could potentially be of assistance.
A few other preventative steps include the following: reduce or even stop consuming food and drink products with caffeine (especially coffee and sodas), stay aware from alcohol, avoid chewing gum or anything else which makes you more inclined to grind your teeth during the night time and learn techniques that will help you relax your jaw muscles prior to going to bed.
