What Is Causing The Loneliness And Isolation Problems In America?

Loneliness and isolation are two separate circumstances that are often linked together because of how one can lead to the other so easily

. Many Americans experience isolation every day of their lives, often in a self imposed state. As technologies have improved along with "social networking," more Americans are finding themselves isolated from real human contact. While this can lead to its own set of problems, it doesn't quite cause loneliness the way that other forms of isolation do. Many Americans, both men and women, suffer from feelings of isolation, and that leads to loneliness. What is the difference between the two, and how do they go hand in hand? To understand that, you really need to know what loneliness actually is.

Loneliness is not simply the act of being alone. It goes further than that. It is the act of feeling alone in the world, even when you're not. It's the feeling that no one else understands you. No one else can relate. If you feel that this describes you, then you are probably lonely. But do you have to be isolated to be alone? The answer to this would be a resounding "no." You can be in a room filled with people and feel lonely. As long as the disconnect exists mentally, then expect problems related to loneliness to arise. Still, isolation can take the problem of loneliness and compound it to the point that it feels even worse.

Consider the way that men and women react to a bad breakup. When a person, no matter the gender, finds themselves in a committed relationship, they give of themselves to the point they are vulnerable. When that giving is rejected, they recoil back into themselves and wind up guarding their emotions. From there, even if they reenter another relationship, they're not really to the point where they've kicked their loneliness because they are keeping the most intimate parts of themselves cordoned off from the other person. Ultimately, this type of behavior can kill future relationships and lead to prolonged isolation, allowing the loneliness problem to grow.

A little isolation can be beneficial to people. But when that's all one ever indulges themselves in, it can quickly cause problems in how to relate to others. And without some form of acceptance in their lives, people in isolation are sure to fall into loneliness at some point. While America is a nation of 310 million people, there is a growing problem of loneliness, and much of it has to do with prolonged isolation.

If you feel that you may be one of the depressed, or if you know someone who is, it's important to get back in to the world and find your worth.
