Content Management System or CMS, in a very straightforward sense is a system for managing content

. The definition is simple, but that is how it is. It also refers to a software package that helps in automating jobs involved in managing information in an organization.

Tony Byrne says that a "CMS should offer at least 4 and ideally 5 of the following attributes: Authoring and/or Transformation Services, Repository Services, Workflow Engine, Templating Engine, Promotion and Distribution Service.

James Robertson defines CMS as: A content management system (CMS) supports the creation, management, distribution, publishing, and discovery of corporate information. It covers the complete lifecycle of the pages on your site, from providing simple tools to create the content, through to publishing, and finally to archiving. It also provides the ability to manage the structure of the site, the appearance of the published pages, and the navigation provided to the users. Many content management systems or CMS are more objective driven. These CMS allow you to manage certain web site contents that have been created or delivered on the web and on other channels. CMS should include other kinds of data management, including these information management systems: DAM: Digital Asset Management, DM: Document Management, KM: Knowledge Management, SCM: Software Configuration Management, CRM: Customer Relationship Management, DRM: Digital Rights Management, CM: Content Management.

With CMS, you need not worry about the layout or page being wrecked even if you did the updating by yourself. CMS actually consists of a number of template files so that you can maintain a design standard that is consistent throughout the website.
