What Is Court Reporting

Court reporters, as the name suggests, report on just about anything to do with court

cases whether the case is highly publicized or a simple divorce case.

There are two main areas involved with court reporting; one is to ensure that every word said in a court room or deposition is captured and then the second involves preparing an accurate transcript of the entire proceedings. The transcript not only is a record of what was said by all the parties, but also identifies anything else that took place, such as the presentation of exhibits or other things that weren't actually spoken.

A court reporter is the individual who ensures that everyone present in the court or deposition has their rights independently protected. In the event of a dispute about what took place, or what was said, the transcript will be referred to as an accurate record of the entire proceedings.

Writing and typing quickly and accurately is key to being able to undertake a court reporters job properly. To this end court reporters use computers and stenographs to aid them. Stenographs are linked to a computer; instead of typing the words in full, such as you would do using a regular keyboard, the stenograph works on the basic sound of the word so the reporter can type quickly. This information is fed to the computer which then translates it back into the written word.

The information is stored so that once the court session finishes the transcript can be fact-checked and further research undertaken as necessary so that ultimately an accurate record is available. The transcript can be sent anywhere electronically or simply printed off in the conventional way.

Technological advances have enabled court reporting to go live. Up to date software now allows a court reporter to present a transcript in real time. Whatever is typed into the stenograph is immediately translated into text by the computer and the text can then be displayed on screens or monitors. This advance is of great importance to those persons who are deaf or have impaired hearing and helps ensure that they get an accurate understanding of what is taking place.

Superb skills in the English language along with the ability to act at speed, but highly accurately are imperative for court reporters. Knowledge about civil and criminal law and other matters pertaining to a court environment such as legal terminology is also important. Additionally, an understanding of other languages can also be important and, as many legal words are derived from Latin words, an understanding of Latin in important.

There is no exact figure relating to the number of court reporters there are in the U.S. because a court reporter can either be employed or work on a freelance basis. The majority of court reporters belong to the United States Court Reporters Association (USCRA), which looks after the interest of court reporters ensuring that the highest standards of reporting are maintained. It ensures the best standards of professionalism, offers continuing education and keeps up to date with the newest technology for use in court reporting.
