What Is Crude Oil

There are a few different definitions of what Crude Oil really is

. In simple terms, Crude Oil is a naturally occurring, flammable liquid consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights and other liquid organic compounds, that are found in geologic formations beneath the Earth's surface.

Another word for Crude oil is Petroleum. This coming from the Greek "petra" which means rock and the Latin "oleum" which means oil. In some ways we could then call it rock oil. (based on the geology and mineralogy)

The classical, but incorrect, theory about crude oil treats it as a fossil fuel. However, hydrocarbons, like oil and natural gas, have been discovered on other planets and also proven to be generated in an abiotic environment, hence the name of the opposing theory about the origins of oil.

You can read more on the subject of Crude oil on Wikipedia. For those who are a little more interested than the average Joe. (there is a lot of information about equations for thermal properties and so on)

Crude oil and what it is used for

As many might know, Crude oil is being pumped up from the ground in the Middle East, the Americas, Asia, West Africa and Norway. This oil is then pumped into big ships which is called tankers and then sent to the different oil refineries in the world.

To refine crude oil is a very complex process. Refining normally begins as a simple distillation but refiners must use more sophisticated additional processes and equipment to produce the right mix which the market demands.

Importance of oil

A lot of people say, the industry should stop hauling and using crude oil. The say, we should protect our planet, save the nature and live an ecological life. In fact, they are right. We all saw the catastrophe last year in the Gulf of Mexico, we all know the gravity of the damages.

But there is something, that pushes the other side of the scale much harder.

Do this people ask themselves what would the consequences look like, if there were no crude oil anymopre? Do they realise, that this would mean the end of todays social well-off? Do they realise, that oil is not just for gasoline good?
