What Is Dedicated Server?
A dedicated server refers to a computer that is used as a single server to a specific account or domain name. It is therefore leased and stored to a data center of the host company. It usually contains an operating system, a web server and related software, and a connection to the internet. This service is typically used by companies that generate a lot of web traffic as they serve as only a resource server and cannot be used as a client.
The server is located at the datacenter just like in collocation facilities but the only difference is that it is owned by the hosting company and that the client has no access to it. The center will provide power and HVAC systems. Dedicated hosting is necessary when the limitations of a shared account affect the business. These limitations include bandwidth and disk space limitation, lack of flexibility and security. There are two types of hosting plans that the company can select from: Managed and unmanaged hosting.
In managed dedicated hosting, the company leases the server and the host provides a data center room that houses the server and the Operating system software. They also offer regular maintenance services and they carry out repair incase of any trouble with it. When providing these services, the hosting team will assist the company in all aspects of server maintenance and discuss with them the options when it comes to the software that the company would use. The company has a complete success and control over it. The only thing that the user needs to ensure is that the person installing the software should be well versed on the server to ensure that the configuration does not bring about any unreasonable load or reduced security levels.
Unmanaged server hosting is cheaper as compared to managed server. In this situation, the server is still owned by the provider and the user has an option of changing servers to a better performing one when the lease is over or negotiate on improved terms on the same one. The host will be responsible for customizing the server to meet the needs of the company and it will contain the necessary Operating system and other software. The client will remotely access the server and carry out the management on their own to ensure that it is kept clean and providing general maintenance to ensure it is always in working conditions.
Selecting between the two types of hosting depends on a lot of factors. Unmanaged option is ideal for those who have a technician who could carry out all the maintenance activities on the system. Managed option is recommended for those who do not wish to use a lot of money since unmanaged hosting constantly need hardware and software updates making it an expensive option. The other advantage of managed hosting over unmanaged is that the technical and administrative support will be provided by the host company.
