What Is Dental Hygiene?
Dental hygiene is the branch of the modern science which deals with the prevention of the dental and oral problems
. A dental hygienist (Registered Dental Hygienist) on the other hand is a medical licensed dental professional whose job is to make sure we dont suffer from any dental and oral problems. In case we are suffering from any such problem then in that case the registered dental hygienist makes sure to treat the problem and help us get out of the trouble. In many states, a registered dental hygienist and a dentist are same but in some states there are certain specific areas which only dental hygienist takes care of.
In simpler words, dental hygiene is the branch of the modern science that helps us keep our mouth and teeth healthy and clean and prevent us from dental and oral problems. There are some common areas which are covered in dental hygiene. Lets have a look at them briefly.
1.Tooth Cleaning:Tooth cleaning is basically the removal of dental plaque and making sure that teeth are not facing any cavities or gingivitis problems. The teeth cleaning are performed mainly by taking care of the plaque and cleaning the teeth cavities and empty spaces among the teeth by proper dental flossing. Plaque is a yellow sticky film that is formed on the teeth and gums. The bacteria in plaque can change the carbohydrates of the food into acid which in turn will damage our teeth. Dental flossing on the other hand makes sure that there is no plaque or any decaying food is stuck inside the gaps between the teeth.
2.Tongue Cleaning: Tongue cleaning is again one of the most important areas of the oral hygiene. Tongue cleaning makes sure that any yellow/white or bad breath generating coating created by bacteria or decaying food items is removed from the tongue. Tongue cleaning makes sure that our surface of the tongue is thoroughly cleaned and there are no bacteria on it. Cleaning the tongue also makes sure that we get full taste of anything we eat.
3.Gum Care and Cleaning: Gum care and cleaning is the next important area covered in the dental hygiene. Gum care makes sure that our gums are healthy and not having any problem whatsoever. Taking care of the gums is important because the teeth roots are held by our gums and if our gums are not strong enough, our teeth will not remain strong no matter how good we are taking care of them.
4.Awareness of the Food Items: This is quite a new area of the dental hygiene and generally not deemed as the core dental hygiene methodology but is quite important. There are many dental specialists who specialize in this very field. The awareness of the food items makes sure that we are knowledgeable enough about various food items that are beneficial and non-beneficial for our dental hygiene. This will make sure we consume more and more healthy food and discard unhealthy food as we go along.
As seen above, dental hygiene covers lot of important areas as far as our dental and oral care is concerned. We recommend you to visit your dentist/registered dental hygienist in case you have any doubts about oral care.
