What Is Diabetic Ketoacidosis?
Diabetic Ketoacidosis is a severe disease in persons who have diabetes for a long time
. Thus it is produced when the pancreas is not producing sufficient amount of Insulin hormone in the body. In other words, production of high level of blood ketones leads to this disease. If the disease remains untreated for a longer time then it may cause severe problems and often fatal.
Brief idea of Diabetic Ketoacidosis:
1. Epidemiology- It is a very common disease of the diabetic patients all over the world. United States of America has the highest record for the disease. It occurs in 10 persons among 1000. In children it is also seen those having Diabetes Type I disease.
2. Signs and symptoms- It includes nausea, abdominal pain, excessive urine production, dry mouth, vomiting etc. But in severe cases it may cause appendicitis, gastrointestinal perforation and acute pancreatitis.
3. Cause-
Diabetic Ketoacidosis is mainly caused due to low production of insulin that is 25%. It is also caused as a result of severe illnesses like influenza, pneumonia, urinary tract infection and myocardial infarction, diarrhoea, severe vomiting and consistent high fever.
4. Mechanism- in normal person, insulin helps the metabolised glucose to get inside the body cell. But in diabetic person, due to lack of insulin the glucose is left outside the cell. This leads to the increased blood glucose level. Therefore the blood glucose is transported in the urinary bladder and mixes with the urine together with the sodium and potassium salts leading to osmotic dieresis. Ketones also take part in the same mechanism and thus results in electrolyte losses leading to thirst and dehydration. Due to the over production of acidic Ketones, the bloods becomes acidic. These are the mechanism shown in Type 1 diabetes. But in Type 2 Diabetes, the mechanism is not clear. Here the high level of glucose cannot suppress the ketogenesis leading to the disease.
5. Diagnosis- the disease is diagnosed by taking urine samples and measuring the amount of glucose and Ketones in the urine.
6. Treatment- Insulin injections and tablets should be taken. Fluid replacement is another method to replace the excess glucose and Ketones from the body. But it is not a full proof as the body again starts producing excess Ketones after few days. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
7. Prevention- physical exercise and yoga can control the hormone production. Always try to have food rich in carbohydrates and salt.
Thus Diabetic Ketoacidosis can be cured if it is in early stage. But if it is untreated for a long time, then it cannot be cured and lastly the patient dies. A special care and diet should be given to them as well as regular monitoring of the disease should be done.
