, you may have come across the acronym "FUE." What is

FUE? It stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. Yes, I know - that hasn't REALLY answered your question,

has it? Follicular unit extraction is a specific technique used in hair transplant surgeries. Before the

invention of this technique, hair transplant surgeries required (some still do) the surgeon to remove a

large swath of skin. This skin contained donor hairs that were cut apart and transplanted into the problem

areas. However, taking this much skin results in a very large and unsightly scar-several inches long. With

this type of procedure, the patient needed to hope that there was enough hair in surrounding areas to

cover this permanent wound. Another downside of this method of hair transplant is that removing a large

area of skin is more likely to cause surgical side effects such as scabbing, rejection, and infection.

During follicular unit extraction, the surgeon uses a tool with a diameter of 0.7 to 1 millimeter. This

micro-tool is used to extract individual hair follicles and to replace the donor hairs into the transplant

site. Since the individual wounds are so small and diffuse, the rate of recovery is much quicker, and

there is no massive scar as a result of the procedure. However, this doesn't mean that there are no risks.

Isolating and removing individual hair follicles is precise work. The practitioner can easily become

fatigued. If a follicle is not perfectly centered during the removal, it can become damaged. A damaged

follicle (also called transected) will not grow hair even after it is transplanted and heals.

Overall, hair transplant techniques are rapidly progressing, but they still aren't the answer for

everyone. There are many factors to consider and the results aren't guaranteed, no matter what type of

procedure is performed.
