What Is Golf Caddy
A caddy or caddie is the person who carries the bag and clubs of a golf player
. He gives incisive advice and moral support and is aware of the challenges and obstacles of the golf course being played. He should know the overall yardage, pin placements and club selection. For this position, physical strength and patience is important. Not a regular employee of a private club or resort, the caddy is classified as an independent contractor. This means that he is basically self employed and does not receive any benefits from his association with the club. There are some clubs and resorts that have caddy programs.
Types of caddies:
Caddying and forecaddying are the two types of caddy positions.
A person is said to be caddying when he carries the bags for the golfer and walks with him. Both the golfer and the caddie walking the course are involved in traditional caddying.
Fore-Caddying involves the caddie walking, at the same time the players ride in carts. After giving a whole description, the fore-caddy walks ahead to spot the players tee shots. He then gets the players yardage whereas the players drive their carts from the tee to their shots. Again, the caddy walks ahead to spot the golfers next shots. This method is continued until the players reach the green. On reaching the green, the caddie will read greens, clean golf balls, fix ball marks, and attend the flag, if asked. He is also responsible for raking traps on the course. If they are asked, caddies will help with club selection, reading greens, weather variables, and marking balls on the green. As a whole, caddy makes the player's round enjoyable by taking care of menial tasks, speeding up play, and providing mental support.
Employment:
Caddies are regularly employed at clubs on weekends, when the majority of country club golf takes place. However, there are some opportunities available during the week also. Besides, usually on a Monday, caddies are often allowed to play the course for free, at which they caddy. Professional caddies go with their player to all events on pro golf tours, which usually take place from Thursday through Sunday. Moreover, the player may hire their caddy to carry their bag during training sessions and practice rounds.
