What Is Good About Balloon Angioplasty

Balloon Angioplasty is said to be the best way to treat coronary artery diseases (CAD)

. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this procedure? Does it really relieve the symptoms like sharp chest pain or angina attacks? Let's discuss coronary artery disease and its management in this article.

The most common heart problems are coronary artery diseases. They are silent killers and can strike almost every age group especially those who are highly risked for the disease. Risk factors for CAD are obesity, sedentary lifestyle, exercise, smoking and alcohol abuse, congenital diseases, age, gender, and family history of heart problems.

The most common symptom of CAD is stable angina. It is indicated by sharp chest pain felt in the left side and radiates to the left shoulders as well as the neck. It can be precipitated by activities like running, strenuous sports and heavy workloads. Depression and severe anxiety can also trigger the attack especially in women who are more prone to stress.

Angina is caused by the blockage of the artery due to arterial plaques. These plaques are made of calcified fats which build-up in the arterial walls. This condition will cause partial or complete blockage of blood which carries oxygen to the heart.

Management for CAD includes both medical and surgical. Medical management includes drug regimens and modifying risk factors like obesity, sedentary lifestyle and exercise. Having enough but light exercise will burn your fats naturally as well as prevent the progression of the disease. It can also maintain and regulate normal blood pressure which promotes general cardiovascular health.

Surgical managements for CAD includes angioplasty, bypass surgery and cardiac catheterization. The safest and less invasive method is balloon angioplasty. It has a shorter recovery period compared to bypass surgery. It is done to facilitate the increase of blood flow towards the heart.

In this procedure, stents are placed instead of making a bypass. A stent is a small catheter which is inserted in the blood vessel in the groin area or in the area above the elbow. Your doctor will guide the catheter inside the blood vessel until reaching the blocked artery. Then the balloon in the tent is inflated that dilates the arterial way making way for the blood to flow in.

This is just an overview of what angioplasty with look like. It is still better if you ask your doctor about it. He will give you further information regarding pros and cons of the procedure. He can also give an advice for some options available.

Don't let sharp chest pain worsen. Seek early treatment as soon as you see the symptoms. Having an early detection and management will help you save your resource and your own life. Don't wait for the time to come that you'll be getting a balloon angioplasty.
