What Is Hair Split Ends

Dealing with split ends is one of the most nerve-wrecking problems of every woman

. Split ends are also termed as trichoptilosis. Split ends arise when, the protective cuticle strips off at the end of the hair fibers. Split end is a problem commonly associated with dry and brittle hair. However, they may be caused by the excessive vigorously brushing and badly damaged hair.

Once the cuticle is ripped off, it cannot be replaced. The hair fiber splits into more than two strands and can be few centimeters in length. The best possible solution to get rid of split ends is to cut off the damaged hair fiber. Regular trimming of hair up to half an inch can also prevents split ends. An easy way to cut down the split ends is to divide your hair into small sections, twist each section separately on your finger moving gradually downwards. Then using a sharp scissors cut down the damaged cuticle. You have to be careful so that you cut the same amount of split ends on each twist to get a layered shape.

Split ends are usually caused by the excessive tangling, improper application of hair extensions, scratchy bedcovers and headgears which damages the hair fibers. Sometimes, overuse of chemical products, heating equipment's, and severe environmental conditions also causes split ends. However, lack of regular maintenance like trimming, use of detangling techniques, over washing and usage of dull scissors may also result in split ends.

Hair treatments like frequent dyeing and perm may also cause hair to become weak and split. In order to avoid split ends, hair must be combed regularly and conditioned properly. Use of heating equipment's must be restricted because they eventually lead to dry and brittle hair. Use of towel for drying the hair must be limited as it makes hair more viable to split ends. Wet hair must be blot carefully, with a towel and then combed by a wide-tooth comb, to prevent split ends. Use of hair dryer and curling tongs must be avoided as much as possible, as they ripe off the protective cuticle layer of the hair. Hair accessories, like elastic bands can damage hair a lot by weakening the end of the hair.
