HIV occurs in three stages. The first stage, lasting 4-8 weeks is immediately after HIV is acquired and flu like symptoms may develop. The next stage, called the latent stage may last for 8 years or more if not treated, but can be extended to twenty years or more of good health if treated. This stage is where the HIV virus replicates itself in the system wearing down the human immune system to the degree that it can no longer defend the body against opportunistic infections (such infections that a healthy immune system would normally not allow) like pneumonia and certain types of cancer. Patients will invariably die on account of such type of infection in the last stage of development, that of fully blown AIDS. There is no cure for AIDS. The HIV virus can't be eradicated because of the strain of virus that consists of RDA. The virus enters the body and attacks the D4 cells in the immune system where it converts itself from RDA into DNA the same building blocks as a normal cell and becomes part of the DNA cell structure, therefore, effectively hiding itself. The occurrence of HIV, thankfully, has over the past 5 years stabilised, after enormous growth in the previous period from 1990 where 8 million occurrences were reported.
