What Is Incontinence And How Many People Have it

Just what is incontinence? Incontinence is perhaps a bigger problem for the general population than you may expect. Thanks to all the recent advertising on treating the condition in Baby Boomers that is saturating the airways, you probably think that this problem is mostly an elderly issue but would it surprise you to learn that nearly 25% of the population between 18 and 25 suffer to some extent?

Incontinence can be basically defined as the uncontrolled passage of urine or faecal material or both. Urinary incontinence is far more common and there are a variety of underlying conditions that can cause. One of the more common conditions is a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles which support all of the organs, including the bladder in the lower abdomen.

When these muscles weaken then the organs can shift causing undo pressure on the bladder. This can cause a light flow or complete loss of control depending on the severity. Other conditions that can cause incontinence include nerve damage to the bladder, and enlarged prostate (most common cause for men) or something as simple as diet.

Faecal incontinence is far less common but is often far more serious in its impact. This condition is the leading cause of admissions to nursing homes. Persons who can't control the passage of stools or of gas carry a bigger stigma and it often is a socially disabling condition.

What is incontinence? It's a condition that affects a large part of the population and one that will probably become more common as the population ages. There are treatments and products that can help manage and cure the condition and it should never be considered an inevitable result of getting old. If you are experiencing this condition seek help from your physician. He or she can get you started on the best therapy to end your concerns.
