What Is Ltl Delivery?

While services with parcel couriers are often phrased in terms of how long it will

take for a package to be delivered, such as "next day service", services in the large trucking industry are phrased differently. Instead, it is more common to describe a shipment in terms of how much of a truck you are going to take up with your cargo. Therefore, when you order LTL courier services, it stands for "less than truck load". The other type of service is "full truck load" or FTL.

These two types of service are both describing the same thing. They are explaining how much of a truck you are going to fill with your cargo. So, if you order FTL service, it means that you are going to fill an entire truck with your cargo. This gives you a certain amount of control over the delivery. When you ship LTL, it means that there is room in the truck which is not consumed with your cargo, which the delivery company is then allowed to fill with cargo from other clients whose goods need to move in the same direction that yours do. While this will lose you certain controls over the delivery, it also offers you some benefits, notably in the cost department.

The reason that shipping is more affordable when you ship with an LTL option is that many of the costs of the delivery are shared between you and all the other people that are shipping on that truck. On any given shipment there could be any number of clients shipping with the courier company. The costs which you would have to pay all by yourself are in a way shared between all those clients, which reduce the amount that your shipment ultimately will cost.

Although LTL shipping can offer you significant savings, the downside to this model is that it will often take longer to get your shipments delivered than FTL shipping will. When you have to share a truck with other clients of the courier company, you may have to wait for the courier to deliver those shipments. Each of those deliveries can delay your shipment a small amount. Also, you can tell an FTL courier what route to take or which order to deliver your shipments in for most cases. LTL does not offer that flexibility most of the time, unless all the other deliveries can still be accommodated while taking your requests into account.
