What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is the process whereby the skin closest to the surface called the epidermis is removed

. This is also known as skin planing using mechanical, chemical, or laser techniques. Unlike dermabrasion, microdermabrasion focuses on the dead skin cells that collect near the surface and typically does not extend deep toward the dermal layers of the skin.

Abrasion of the skin is not a new cosmetic revelation. Ancient Egyptians would use a variation of sandpaper to smooth out scars that formed in the skin. Even before the recent advent of laser technology and booming cosmetic industry, rotating wheels and rasps were used to remove the outer layers of skin in Germany in the early 1900s.

The lack of technology and methodology meant that the abrasive procedure of removing surface skin had considerable drawbacks. Considerable pain would result without the use of an anaesthetic coupled with prolonged recovery, potential scarring, and possible infection.

Today, microdermabrasion has developed into a procedure that has seen a massive ride in popularity over the past 15 year. This is in part thanks to Dr. Mattioli and Dr. Brutto who, in 1985 Italy, developed the first microdermabrasion machine. The machine would abrade the skin, simultaneously delivering the dirty aerosolized skin particles into a separate container.

There are many microdermabrasion machines on the market today, most of which are based off the same design. Crystals, most commonly corundum or aluminum oxide, are drawn across the skin while a vacuum removes the used crystals and skin cells during the process. These crystals provide the abrasiveness required to remove skin, are incredibly strong, and do not react chemically with the skin. These crystals also do not absorb into the skin and have certain antibacterial qualities that make them ideal for the patient.

The ability for microdermabrasion techniques to rejuvenate the skin and remove superficial blemishes has attracted the attention of another popular cosmetic practice. Lasers are also used to abrade the skin for the same purpose as microdermabrasion. These laser peels make use of light energy to ablate the skin from the surface and exposing the fresh, new skin underneath.

Laser microdermabrasion can be applied using a variety of lasers including CO2 and erbium. Like its classic microdermabrasion counterpart, it requires an anaesthetic. One advantage of using lasers is that the heat produced from the laser itself stimulates collagen production in the deeper, dermal layers of the skin. This tightens the skin for a longer lasting, and more youthful appearance.
