What Is Neuropathy

Neuropathy or more accurately peripheral neuropathy will typically prompt numbness and pain in the hands and feet

. The pain is characterized by tingling or burning, decreased sensitivity and the sensation of having on gloves or stockings. It is induced by impairment to the nerves. This may be brought about because of infections, metabolic problems, toxin exposure and severe injury. A major cause is diabetes.

The symptoms of the disease can get better over time, this is even more likely when the condition that prompts its development is resolved. Numerous medications are administered to alleviate the pain associated with the disease.

The nervous system is segmented into two distinct sections. The two areas include the central nervous system which is comprised of the brain and spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system which is comprised of the other nerves. The nerves which are afflicted with this disorder includes sensory nerves that are responsible for feeling pain, touch et al; motor nerves that are utilized for muscle movement and autonomic nerves that regulate certain bodily functions inclusive of heart rate, blood pressure, bladder function and digestion.

Quite often the condition may begin within the longest nerves those that extend to the toes. The symptoms will be linked to the nerves which are impaired. These symptoms include:

* A sensation of numbness in the hands that may move up to the upper legs or arms

* Reduced motor skills and lack of coordination

* Bowel or bladder issues when the autonomic nerves are afflicted with the condition

* Burning Pain

* Muscle weakness and probable paralysis if motor nerves are afflicted with the disorder

* Sensitivity to touch

* Sharp pains that feel like electricity going through the affect area.

You should see your doctor if you feel an abnormal weakness, tingling or pain in the hands or feet. The sooner it is diagnosed the more improved your odds of not suffering extreme impairment to the nerve. If the disorder affects your ability to sleep or function regularly your physician will be able to prescribe a needed course of treatment.

Risk factors include:

* Alcohol Abuse

* Diabetes especially if the disease is not being controlled.

* Thyroid, Kidney or Liver disease

* Toxin Exposure

* Autoimmune diseases where the disease attacks the body's own tissue. These diseases include lupus, and arthritis

* Infections inclusive of Lyme disease, Epstein Barr and Hepatitis C

* Constant physical stress

* Vitamin deficiencies, especially B vitamins
