What Is Nocturia – More Than Just An Inconvenience
What Is Nocturia More Than Just An Inconvenience
Maybe you've heard the term before but if you don't understand just what it means then you are probably asking yourself what is nocturia. Well the answer is pretty simple and if you are getting up in age you may find yourself experiencing it as well.
Nocturia is simply the need to get up in the middle of the night and use the bathroom. The human body is designed to basically shut down the need to urinate for about eight hours when we go to sleep. The body generates a hormone that actually condenses the urine so that more can fit in the bladder and we can get a full night's rest.
There are a number of reasons why that master plan can fail and we'll discuss them in a minute. The important thing to remember is that this condition can be dangerous and even deadly and you should not ignore it. While it may seem like an inconvenience and simply a part of growing older, it can be treated and it should be treated.
Frequent trips to the bath room can leave you sleep deprived which means your waking day can be more difficult to get through without having a burning desire to catch a nap. If that desire happens when you're driving a car, well the results are obviously not good.
More commonly, people tend to trip and fall while trying to find their way to the bathroom in the dark of night. Falls, particularly for the elderly, can be life changing.
There are a number of causes for this condition and they run the gamut. The body may simply slowed down the production of the anti-diuretic hormone and that's causing a full bladder after 2 or three hours. Or there be more underlying causes like diseases, infections, nerve damage or a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles.
What is nocturia? It's a condition that you need to see your doctor about. There are simple treatments that can manage and even cure the condition depending on the causes.
