What Is Seo?

If you own a website or are currently working within web design or marketing then you would have heard of the term SEO - but what does it mean?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, which is basically all the methods that can be employed in order to help your website rank higher in the search engine results page's otherwise known as the SERP's.

The process of what SEO does is relatively simple: An end user enters a query into a search engine (At the moment Google are the largest search engine with a share of over 90%, closely followed by Bing and Yahoo who at the moment are both fighting for 2nd place), once the query has been entered the search engine uses its own algorithm to calculate which results should be shown at the top of the SERP's.

It's this battle for a top ranking position that makes SEO so important as rival companies will be ranking for the same terms and it's therefore essential that they rank high in the SERP's in order to attract customers/end users. How they manage to rank higher than their completion in the SERP's comes down to SEO and how they undertake any optimisation that is required.

Failure to undertake any SEO at all will mean that the affected company won't rank as high as any of its competitors who are performing SEO and will gradually lead to a loss in sales and revenue for that particular company if they depend primarily on the SERP's to gain customers.

SEO is split between two very different worlds; there is good SEO practice and bad SEO practice. Good SEO practice would be following Google's webmaster guidelines and undertaking tactics that most online companies participate in such as article submitting, creating blogs that backlink to the main website and optimising keywords within their content.

However some organisations partake in underhand SEO tactics that are not so ethical when it comes to web marketing such as buying or selling links and keyword stuffing.

SEO also involves On-page and Off-page factors. On-page SEO refers to anything that concerns the content on the main website such as having the right keywords within the Meta tags and Meta descriptions and making sure the webpage can be effectively crawled by search engine spiders.

Off-page SEO refers to all the work that is carried out off the main website through article syndication websites (websites that automatically spread your article(s) on other article submission websites), press releases, submitting link bait to relevant social bookmarking websites and creating blogs.

When performing SEO it is important to remember that results take time to achieve and you should wait for at least 3-4 months after tweaking your website or undertaking Off-page SEO to see any results.
