What Is Skin Elasticity, And How Does It Affect Liposuction?

Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) is a popular procedure throughout America and throughout the world

. Inside the United States, hundreds of thousands of people undergo this procedure every year. For twelve out of the past thirteen years, lipoplasty has ranked as the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in the nation. Elsewhere in the world, the surgery is similarly popular.

But, popular though it is, the surgery isn't for everyone. There are some characteristics and conditions which can either disqualify someone from getting a lipoplasty. For example, serious chronic disease, diabetes and a history of severe blood clots could disqualify a person from getting the procedure. There are some which make it less likely that the surgery will produce optimal results. One of these is low skin elasticity.

Not everyone knows what skin elasticity is, but the idea is actually fairly self-explanatory. A person's skin elasticity is a measurement of how stretchy and tight-fitting a person's skin. A person with tight, stretchy skin has a high level of skin elasticity. A person with loose, baggy skin has low skin elasticity.

Because liposuction removes excess fat, it tends to work best on people with stretchy, tight skin. If a person does not have tight skin, the removal of mass from inside the body could cause wrinkles and excess skin.

One way to test how elasitc your own skin is is to pinch a section of your skin where there is some excess, such as one the back of your hand. Hold the skin up for several seconds and then let it go again. How quickly did your skin return to its original position? Did it snap back fairly instantaneously, or did it take a few seconds for it to settle back? The more quickly your skin settled back into its original position, the more elastic your skin is.

Skin elasticity is affected by a number of factors. Some it has to do with skin health. It also is somewhat a condition of genetics; elastic skin sometimes seems to follow family lines. It is also connected to age. Younger people tend to have more elastic skin than older people. Also, people who have been extremely overweight but who have lost significant amounts of weight tend to experience a loss in skin elasticity. However, these are merely general statements. Some old people have great skin elasticity and some relatively young people do not. There are exceptions to all of these rules.
