What Is Sliplining?

Sliplining is one of the oldest methods for trenchless repair and rehabilitation for conventional pipelines

. Sliplining is used to repair leaks or to rehabilitate structural soundness of a damaged pipeline. This method is carried out by the installation of a smaller pipe, which is known as a carrier pipe, into a bigger pipe, which is called a host pipe. Next is grouting the annular space between the two pipes, and sealing both ends. Sliplining method has been used since the 1940s.

The most common material used to slipline a damaged pipeline is high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, but fibre reinforced polymers, or FRPs, and polyvinyl chloride, or PVCs, are also used. Sliplining can be used to prevent infiltration and rehabilitate structural soundness of a damaged pipe. Sizes of the pipes in which sliplining is applied vary in individual cases.

There are two procedures on installing a slipline. One of which is continuous sliplining. Continuous sliplining makes use of a long continuous pipe, such as high-density polyethylene or fusible polyvinyl chloride, which can be combined into continuous pieces of any dimension. The continuous carrier pipe is then pulled through the damaged host pipe beginning at an insertion ditch and continuing to the receiving ditch.

Segmental sliplining, on the other hand is very much similar to continuous sliplining. But the difference of this pipeline rehabilitation method is that it is primarily based on the pipe material used as the new carrier pipe. When using any bell and spigot pipeline such as fibre reinforced polymer. Polyvinyl chloride or high-density polyethylene, each pieces of the pipe are put lower into place, compressed together, and pushed along the damaged host pipeline. Having either method, the annular space between the two pipelines must be grouted. In the instance of sanitary pipelines, the service laterals must be reconnected through excavation.

Sliplining is generally one of the most inexpensive methods of pipeline repairs. It is also very much easy to install and requires easily-available tools and equipments to any pipeline servicemen. Segmental sliplining method also do not require bypassing the existing flow.

The new pipe, however, will have considerably reduced cross-sectional area because of the size difference between the existing pipes inner diameter and the new pipes outer diameter, as well as the thickness of the new pipes wall. Segmental sliplining pipeline rehabilitation usually needs excavation at the insertion and receiving ditches. Continuous sliplining, on the other hand, requires flow bypassing.
