What Is Stuttering - Kill Your Stammer

What is stuttering? Well, also termed as stammering or disfluent speech, stuttering is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, consequently disrupting the normal flow of speech. The flow of speech is also disrupted by involuntary silent pauses or blocks in which the stutterer is unable to produce sounds. Therefore, the term is not only associated with involuntary sound repetition but also with the abnormal hesitation or pausing before speech, which is referred to by stutterers as blocks, as well as the prolongation of certain sounds. These disruptions in the flow of speech may be accompanied by struggling behaviors such as rapid eye blinks or tremors of the lips.

The symptoms of stuttering can vary significantly throughout a person?s day. Similarly, this speech defect covers a wide spectrum of severity. It may encompass individuals with barely perceptible impediments, and it can also include those people whose condition is extremely severe that the problem impedes most of their oral communication. For unclear reasons, a person may stutter more when speaking before a crowd or talking on the telephone as compared to when a person sings, reads, or speaks in unison.

Because of this defect, it becomes more difficult for people who are suffering from it to communicate with others. This, in turn, often affects the quality of their lives. Stuttering affects both cognitive and affective aspects of a person?s life in a negative way. People who are suffering from this condition may feel embarrassed, frustrated, scared, angry, guilty, or ashamed of themselves. Also, the increased tension and effort they put in when communication may lead to more stuttering.

Over time, continued exposure to difficult speaking experiences may give rise to a negative self-concept and self-image. The person may displace his frustrations and anger towards other people, or project his feelings towards another because of the belief that others think of him as stupid or awkward. There are even reports that stutterers often do not get job promotions or find it difficult pursuing relationships.

Although it is important for us to answer the question ?what is stuttering?, it is even more important for us to answer the question ?how can we help these people?.
