Saturday in Design - Representations

This event was hosted in New South Wales' Surry Hills recently, and highlighted the amazing possibilities for spaces when top artists and designers are given the freedom of the enormous range of modular carpet tiles to create a space that perfectly complements an idea.

Hassell - A Sense of the Neverending

This installation by Hassell was voted as the winner by attendees; it utilized both the traditional Fifth Wall - the floor and the 'secondary' Fifth Wall - the ceiling. The patterning on the carpet tiles was matched to the wall decorations, and unique mirrored sections were created in the floor to give a very visceral 'sense of the neverending'.

Geyer - Pause

This is just one part of Geyer's design for the 'Representations' gallery, however the others show similar artful arrangement and use of solid blocks and micro-patterning to make a definite, inspirational setting within the gallery.

Woods Bagot - Design Statement, The Unexpected

Woods Bagot aimed to create a three-dimensional space with their carpet tile installation in the Representations Gallery. It turned out almost like a fascinating optical illusion, that challenges all your prior conceptions and expectations about carpet.

The Fifth Wall Gallery

There are some truly talented designers in Australia, embracing the concept of The 5th Wall in truly striking ways. These examples are only the beginning of the fascinating spaces people have created with the freedom of expression that carpet tiles can create.

An amazing use of a simple product to create a completely original space. In an area where you'd expect linoleum or wood flooring (an elevator lobby), carpet is unique in a tactile and atmospheric sense, and the modular nature of the carpet tiles meant that the space was completed beautifully, without compromise in the design.

This variation and delineation within the office space simply wouldn't have been possible without the Fifth Wall - partitioning would have been the likely alternative.
