What Is The International Council Of Nurses?
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is a group of national nursing associations from more than 130 countries
. It represents more than 13 million nurses around the world. The ICN is the first international organization for healthcare professionals. It was formed in 1899. It is also one of the largest such organizations. The ICN is run by nurses for nurses. It advocates for quality nursing care for everyone, for good health policy globally, for the improvement of nursing knowledge, and for a satisfied nursing workforce.
The ICN has three main goals and five core values. The goals are 1) to bring nursing together worldwide, 2) to advance nurses and nursing worldwide, and 3) to influence health policy. The five core values are visionary leadership, inclusiveness, flexibility, partnership, and achievement.
The ICN has formulated guidelines in ethics, nursing practice, education, management, research and socio-economic welfare. These guidelines and policies are used worldwide as a foundation for the nursing profession.
In the area of professional nursing practice, the ICN is especially involved in the international classification for nursing practice (ICNP), advanced nursing practice, entrepreneurship, HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria, women's health, primary health care, family health, and safe water.
In the area of nursing regulation, the ICN has taken a leading role in regulation and credentialing of nurses, code of ethics, standards and competencies for nurses, and continuing education.
In the area of socio-economic welfare for nurses, the ICN is particularly active in the areas of occupational health and safety, human resources planning and policy, and career development.
To achieve its goals, the ICN has formed partnerships with governments and other agencies at the national and regional level.
The ICN sees its mission as leading people to better health. The ICN uses the knowledge of the entire nursing profession to promote healthy lifestyles, healthy workplaces, and healthy communities. The organization also works to fight poverty, pollution and other international problems that contribute to illness. The ICN also is working to use advanced technology in healthcare, without sacrificing the human dimension, including spiritual and emotional needs.
The ICN is at the forefront of nursing education, working to bring higher levels of nursing education to every country, education that is scientifically based, but also sensitive to the various cultures.
The organization is based in Geneva, Switzerland. The next ICN International Conference is scheduled for May 2-6, 2011 on Malta. The goal of the conference will be to provide opportunities for spreading nursing knowledge and nursing leadership across countries and cultures.
