What Is The Most Comfortable Listening Level Hearing Test?

One of the steps in learning about the condition of your ears is to have the most comfortable listening level hearing test, also called the MCL

. This is one component of numerous tests that an audiologist will perform when you come in for a complete screening. It provides information about your ability to hear well and can provide doctors with an indication of what steps to take to improve your overall ability to hear well. Though not everyone will have this part of the screening process, most will. There's nothing to worry about during it as it is noninvasive and does not cause any pain at all.

Getting You Ready

When you come in for a hearing test, the doctors will talk to you about your symptoms and any concerns you have. You'll need to provide information about your medical history and your working conditions. After a few other basic tests, including a pure tone threshold screening and a speech recognition threshold screening, your doctor will perform the MCL. To do this, you will be in a soundproof room. This ensures that no outside noises will get in the way of your ability to hear. You will then wear headphones over your ears. The sounds will come through these.

What Happens During the Testing?

The most comfortable listening level component of this screening process is just what it sounds like. Sound will come through the headphones into your ears. You are able to communicate either by raising your hand or by pressing a button provided to you. In some cases, you will be able to simply talk and be heard by the testing administer. During the screening, the sounds will change and get louder. Your goal will be to select the level of sound that you prefer to hear. You will be able to identify the level at which point you feel it is easy and even comfortable to hear the sounds being provided to you. You do not want to tell the test administer this is the case until you are actually at the right level. You need to know you can hear those sounds well.

With the information from this particular component of the hearing test, your audiologist can better determine if there are any concerns with your ability to hear. If there are, he or she will then work with you to determine what steps can be taken to fix the problem for good. Keep in mind that this is just one step in this process. It is not always possible to provide a definitive answer to these questions, but be sure to do your best to get an accurate view of your ability to hear.
